Geo Magazine: January 2022
Geo magazine published an article on the level of snow cover in French ski resorts.
Defining a ranking of the snowiest ski resorts in France is like a black run, very difficult. Because to be completely objective, several parameters must be looked at with a magnifying glass: there is of course the snow measurement recorded at the bottom and at the top of the slopes but also the altitude of the ski area, its slope(s), the sunshine of the massif, weather variables…
Geo journalists have therefore slalomed between different specialized sites (hauteurdeneige.com, skiinfo.fr or france-montagnes.com) to draw up its ranking, based solely on the cumulative snow depth and this on an average of the last eight seasons, between 2012 and 2020.
"It's not Claude, the resort's snow expert, who would contradict us. With an average of 524 cm per season over 8 years, La Plagne (1970m) is one of the most snow-covered French resorts. A gift that has not of prizes for the station which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2021!"

Before renting a ski chalet in the alps, find out about the snow level. In the low altitude resorts, you will not have snow for the Christmas period if the season is even just a little late.

The effects of climate change are there and are being felt in ski resorts. "We have already lost the equivalent of a month of snow, compared to the 1970s, because of shorter winters", observes Samuel Morin, researcher and director of the CNRM (National Center for Meteorological Research).
However, not all locations will be affected to the same extent. To understand where the situation will be most critical, Le Figaro has compared the projections for 95 resorts in the Alps and 26 in the Pyrenees according to two additional criteria: the average winter snowfall over the period 2041-2070, and the difference this represents compared to at baseline (1976-2005).
The results are clear: some resorts are much more threatened than others, but for most, it will be necessary to invent a new tourist model.
A few rare areas such as La Plagne and Paradiski, in Savoie, should not experience any major weather changes.
Tarentaise resorts like La Plagne will be the French resorts least affected by the lack of snow.
There are a few (rare) stations that would come out unscathed. All are located in the Vanoise massif. All areas of these resorts have one thing in common: they are located at very high altitude: between 2450m and 2700m on average.
