1. Must-Ski Off-Piste Routes in La Plagne

Drawing on our local expertise, we have selected the routes that have made our ski area legendary. Each itinerary has its own unique character, from high-altitude glacial terrain to the secret glades just above the lovely chalets for rent in Montchavin Les Coches.

Le Tour du Saint Jacques: Through Forests and Villages

Start: Top of the Arpette chairlift (Plagne Bellecôte).
Finish: Bottom of the La Roche chairlift.

This off-piste run is considered "relatively easy" and cleverly mixes steep pitches, forest tracks, and crossings through alpine hamlets inhabited only in the summer. It is a highly scenic and varied route. The expert's alternative: For those with more stamina, it is possible to descend all the way to Sangot in the valley. Expect over 3 hours of pure descent, far from any ski lifts, in absolute silence before returning to your ski in ski out chalet for a rest in on of our sauna.

La Combe de la Salla: Powder Paradise

Start: Top of the Arpette chairlift (Plagne Bellecôte).
Finish: Plan-Bois (Les Coches).

This is the dream itinerary for powder hounds. It begins with an immense open powder field where you can carve big turns, followed by a superb forest run that ends with a playful slalom through the trees. A complete run that combines speed with technical tree-skiing.

La Combe des Arrières: The Panoramic Introduction

Start: Roche de Mio.
Finish: Bottom of the Rossa chairlift (Champagny).

Ideal for those new to off-piste skiing, this route offers gentle slopes and a very long descent. The views over the Vanoise peaks are simply magnificent. It is the perfect run to build confidence in un-groomed snow while enjoying a grand setting.

ADVICE FROM THE DAKOTA TEAMS

Off-piste skiing is a total disconnect experience that must absolutely be done with an instructor.

2. The Bellecôte Glacier: The Alpine Freeride Sanctuary

Culminating at 3,250 meters, the glacier is the starting point for La Plagne's most challenging descents. This is where you’ll find the runs that have made the resort a world-renowned freeride destination.

The North Face of Bellecôte: 2,000m of Legend

The North Face is a monument. With over 2,000 meters of vertical drop, it offers itineraries such as the "Petit Face Nord" or more technical couloirs. The snow there often remains cold and light thanks to its exposure. It is high-mountain terrain that demands flawless technique and professional guidance.

Le Cul du Nant: The Wild Escape

Another gem of the glacier, the Cul du Nant drops down the south side towards Champagny-le-Haut. It is a wild descent facing the Vanoise glaciers, where the sense of isolation is total. You leave the ski area behind to enter a preserved valley, offering natural skiing of rare purity.

3. Improving Your Off-Piste Skills: The La Plagne Experts

Off-piste skiing is not something to be improvised. For our guests at Chalet Dakota, we have selected the best partners to help you discover these areas in total safety, whether you are looking for the conviviality of a group or the exclusivity of private coaching.

"À la Carte" Off-Piste with Jean-Yves from Ski Passion

We use this option every year for our own outings. Jean-Yves is THE specialist off-piste instructor in La Plagne.

  • The concept: A small group is formed each day for a 9:00 AM departure from Plagne Centre.
  • The program: A custom itinerary based on snow conditions and your preferences.
  • Equipment: Ski Passion provides the essential safety gear (backpack, shovel, probe, transceiver). However, you must have off-piste oriented skis with wide tips (rocker).
  • Rates: Sliding scale based on the number of participants (expect around €120 for a single person, dropping to €73/day if there are three of you).
  • Lunch break: Usually quite short, typically at an altitude snack bar.

Full-Day Private Booking: The Ultimate Tailor-Made Experience

For total immersion and uncompromising progress, booking a private instructor for the day is the most popular option for families or groups of friends staying at the chalet. This formula offers complete geographical and technical freedom.

  • Exclusivity: The instructor is dedicated exclusively to your group (up to 6 people), allowing you to stay together and progress at your own pace.
  • Flexibility: The instructor adapts to you. You determine the departure time, and the itinerary is adjusted in real-time according to your level, stamina, and, most importantly, where the best pockets of powder are at that moment.
  • Peace of Mind: This is the ideal solution for tackling legendary routes like the North Face of Bellecôte or the wild descent towards Sangot, with the assurance of an expert focused solely on your safety and enjoyment.

Teen Off-Piste Camps: The ESF Option

Do your teenagers have a thirst for adrenaline? Our own children love these sessions from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM. They join other young skiers, supervised by ESF instructors, to discover new off-piste tracks every day. It’s an ideal format that allows everyone to reunite in the early afternoon for family skiing after they’ve spent the morning "charging." Safety equipment (transceiver, shovel, probe) is also provided by the ESF.

SAFETY: THE ABSOLUTE PRIORITY

  • The Vital Trio: Never go beyond the markers without an Avalanche Transceiver (DVA), a shovel, and a probe. Knowing how to use them is just as crucial as owning them.
  • The Guide: All the itineraries mentioned (Saint Jacques, Salla, Arrières, Bellecôte) must be undertaken with a certified guide or instructor.
  • Ski Equipment: To truly enjoy the powder, rent "Fat" skis (wide underfoot). Our partner shops in Plagne 1800 will be able to advise you on the best equipment for the day's conditions.

4. Your Freeride Stay with Dakota Chalets

Our chalets have been designed to make life easier for demanding skiers.

  • High-End Ski Room: Store your off-piste gear in our secure room equipped with boot warmers. Nothing is more pleasant than slipping into dry boots before tackling the North Face.
  • Post-Effort Recovery: After a 3-hour descent towards Sangot, your body will appreciate the chalet's sauna or a relaxing moment by the fireplace in our large living room.
  • Morning Advice: We regularly share with you the latest information on snow conditions and which sectors to prioritize based on wind and sunshine.

Did you know?

La Plagne is regularly ranked among the best ski domains in the world for its off-piste opportunities.

Exploring the Beaufortain Range

If you want to take the adventure even further, turn your gaze toward the Versant du Soleil. Facing La Plagne, on the foothills of the Beaufortain, high-mountain guides can take you on 1 to 2-day loops with an overnight stay in an unmanned mountain hut. This is the ultimate stage of wild skiing: climbing under your own power for a solitary descent into a pristine combe, far from any ski lifts.
